Preparing for Pueblo's Future The Board of Water Works is preparing for Pueblo's future. In recent years, summer irrigation demands have bumped up against current water treatment plant capacity.
The Board of Water Works has implemented changes in the water treatment process to better equip the utility to meet current and future water quality regulations. Providing customers of the Pueblo Water System with the highest quality drinking water is of prime importance to the Board of Water Works, and doing this while keeping the cost of water within reason is a challenge the utility is tackling head-on.
Puebloans enjoy water rates and system connection charges that fall well below those of similar water utilities up and down Colorado's front range. Will the cost of the treatment plant expansion and water quality enhancements cause rates and fees to go up significantly? The Water Works doesn't think so. Even though the total cost of all recent system improvements has exceeded $50,000,000, cash flow projections indicate only modest and routine rate increases over the next several years will be necessary. The utility has almost totally improved or replaced its distribution mains over the last twenty-five years, putting the critical infrastructure in tiptop shape, ready to serve the community's needs well into the future.
