Water treatment and maintenance jobs can be office or general labor positions that involve working indoors and out. Typically, the skills required include strong math skills, computer experience, experience with water mains, water pumps, electrical components, maintenance equipment, water treatment chemicals, and laboratory equipment. Examples include water treatment operators, chemists, laboratory technicians, electronics technicians, maintenance workers, and pump station operators.
The minimum level of education required to perform water treatment and maintenance job functions is a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Depending upon the amount of specialization required to perform the job functions, employees may also be required to complete college coursework, obtain a technical certificate, professional license, a Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 Water Distribution Operator Certification and/or a Class A, B or C Water Treatment Operator Certification issued by the State of Colorado Department of Health and Public Environment Operator Certification Board.
