Saving Water Outdoors

  1. Don’t over water your lawn. As a general rule, Pueblo’s lawns should remain green when watered every 3 to 5 days.
On the days you water your lawn, apply 3/4” to 1” of water slowly enough that runoff and puddles do not occur.
  2. Cut evaporation loss by watering outdoors before 10:00 am and after 6:00 pm.
  3. Check sprinkler systems and timers regularly to be sure they operate properly.
  4. Adjust sprinklers to water your lawn, garden and shrub areas – not the street, driveway or sidewalks.
  5. Raise the lawnmower blade to its highest level, or at least to three inches.

  1. Use a broom, not the hose, to clean your driveway and sidewalks.
  2. If you wash your car at home, use a bucket and hose with auto shut-off.
  3. Plant smart. Xeriscape is a great way to design, plant and maintain your yard.
  4. Use mulch in your gardens to maintain soil moisture and control weeds.
  5. If you install a pond or fountain, be sure it recirculates its water.
Saving Water Indoors
  1. Be sure the pipes and fixtures in your home are leak-free.
  2. Don't let the water run while washing or shaving your face.
  3. In the shower, turn water on to get wet, turn off while lathering, then turn it back on to rinse. Repeat when washing your hair.
  4. Don't pour water down the drain if there is another use for it, such as plant watering.
  5. Install flow-restricting aerators on all household faucets.

  1. Run dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully-loaded.
  2. Store drinking water in the refrigerator, so you won't be running the tap until it's cool.
  3. Start a compost pile to reduce usage of your garbage disposal.
  4. Insulate your hot water pipes to cut down on running water while warming up.
  5. Dispose of facial tissues and similar waste in the wastebasket, not the toilet.
